Below is a short response to the statement, “God is loving, I’m a good person – I think God will accept me.”
It sounds like your saying our morality is good enough? That assumes we have a good idea of right and wrong and the ability to live it out. Most people would agree, no one can be completely good. So, if a person is only a little good then how would it be possible for a perfect God to live with a sinful person? It’s not possible. Heaven would be the same as life now – that’s not good news. Or we have a God who can somehow take away our sin by perverting justice – that’s illogical.
So, knowing that we are unable to be perfect tells us we need a God of grace. We need something different than the here and now. A way to get rid of sin and be with God. Jesus Christ fulfilled that need and only him. Galatians 1:4 – 5 says about Jesus, “who gave himself for our sins to rescue us from this present evil age according to the will of our God and Father, to whom be glory forever and ever!” Faith in Jesus who died and rose again is good news. 2 Cor 5:21, “God made the one who did not know sin to be sin for us, so that in him we would become the righteousness of God.”
The way to heaven is not through man’s way. Man’s ideas of God is insufficient. A God of our choosing is no God at all. Psalm 115:3-5, “Our God is in heaven! He does whatever he pleases! Their idols are made of silver and gold – they are man-made. They have mouths, but cannot speak, eyes, but cannot see…” Other beliefs can appear good, but if it doesn’t come from God, how can it be good? Paul said in Gal 1:12, “I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it; rather, I received it by revelation from Jesus Christ. We can’t worship any God we want when our need is specific. You are right, God is loving and he made a way to him- the only way, through Jesus Christ.
